When we avoid being aware of ourselves in the present moment, we will most likely behave to numb ourselves out so we donโ€™t have to feel what the present moment feels like.โฃ

Here are some examples:โฃ

- ๐…๐ž๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  - โ€œMy back feels a bit soreโ€ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ ๐›๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ - sit down watching TV until late, repeated and reliant sessions with osteopath, telling yourself the story that โ€œIโ€™m so old and creaky, thatโ€™s just how it is now, I canโ€™t expect anything moreโ€โฃ

- ๐…๐ž๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  - โ€œafter that birth, I donโ€™t even want to think about โ€œdown thereโ€โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ ๐›๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ - take a large and impersonal group exercise class, buy products to deal with result of pelvic floor dysfunction, laugh off the symptoms you have at every opportunity โ€œoh my PF is shot to pieces, pissed myself laughing has become a real thing!โ€โฃ

- ๐…๐ž๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  - โ€œfriend asks you to join her for a beginners tennis class - you are scared of this, starting running again hurt and you stopped as a resultโ€ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ ๐›๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ - say no, donโ€™t join anything new because it may hurt, stick with what you know, the same class onlyโฃโฃ

- We ruminate on whatโ€™s happened before and apply that to nowโฃ

- We catastrophize about the futureโฃ

- By doing this we are less flexible with our approach to any situation and less able to respond helpfullyโฃ

- We avoid the trigger that may feel threatening โฃ

  • Thank your mind for looking out for youโฃ

  • Feel the ground beneath your feet & the chair (or other surface) touching your bodyโฃ

  • Take your thoughts along with you into whatever newness aligns with your values.โฃ
